Victoria Engineered Wood Floor Installation and Repair

Engineered wood flooring combines the look and feel of solid hardwood flooring with the durability of a vinyl or laminate floor.  It has become a popular alternative to solid hardwood in recent years due to its lower price point and wider range of design options.  It still looks just like solid hardwood, though - its top layer is made from exactly the same material!  If you love the elegance of solid hardwood but need a little more durability (or want to save a little money), an engineered wood floor might be just what you need.

The versatility of engineered wood extends to its installation method.  Depending on the type of subfloor you have, there are four ways to install engineered wood.  It can be installed as a floating floor over another solid flooring type (solid hardwood or tile), or it can be glued, stapled, or nailed to the subfloor. Get in touch with our team to find out which installation would best suit your home or business.

If you are looking to install or repair an existing engineered wood floor or install a brand new one in Victoria, BC, give our engineered wood flooring experts a call.  Whether you need flooring for a small bedroom or a sprawling retail store, our technicians at Tiling Victoria will make your new floor both beautiful and highly-functional!

Why Choose Engineered Wood?

Engineered wood floors have several advantages over both solid hardwood and vinyl or laminate.  Here are a few reasons that home and business owners in Victoria, BC choose engineered wood:

  • Price: Engineered wood looks exactly like solid hardwood, but it costs much less.  Unlike solid hardwood, which is made entirely from solid timber, engineered wood only uses a thin piece of timber for its top layer.  The core of engineered wood is made from layers of bonded plywood, which is much less expensive to manufacture.  Using less solid timber also makes engineered wood a more environmentally friendly choice!

  • Durability: Thanks to its plywood core, engineered wood flooring can withstand much more and heavier traffic than hardwood, making it ideal for commercial environments.  It also doesn’t expand and contract as much as solid hardwood does, and it can be manufactured to be moisture resistant.  So unlike hardwood, engineered wood can be used in any room in your home or business!

  • Repairability: One of the biggest drawbacks of vinyl and laminate is that they are very difficult to repair.  Engineered wood, on the other hand, can be sanded and refinished at least once or twice during its lifetime.  Removing stains or scratches from engineered wood is a simple process, and its color can even be changed by refinishing.

In short, engineered wood provides all the benefits of solid hardwood (including increasing the value of your home), but it costs less and can be used in a much wider range of applications.  If you are looking to remodel your home or business, you can’t go wrong with engineered wood!

Our Engineered Wood Floor Services

Engineered Wood Floor Installation

Regardless of which installation method is used, the basic process is the same.  First, the planks must be acclimated to the room they will be installed in.  This can take two or three days, depending on the specific type of flooring you choose.  We will use this acclimation period to clean and level the subfloor and to install underlayment if any is needed.

Next, we will measure and cut the planks so that they are centered in the room, straight, and just the right lengths to cover the floor with only a small expansion gap around the perimeter of the room.  This step is perhaps the most important part of the process as it has the biggest impact on the appearance of the room when the floor is complete.  One wrong measurement could make your entire floor crooked or off-center!

Once the necessary cuts have been made, we will begin installing the planks along the longest straight wall in the room.  While some types of engineered wood flooring use a tongue and groove system, most require each plank to be glued to the one beside it.  This part of the process can take some time to do correctly, but it is well worth the time spent to ensure that every row is evenly spaced and that no glue squeezes through to the surface of your new floor.

If we are installing in a high traffic area (such as a hallway or living area), it may be necessary to complete the installation in phases.  If any glue is used during the installation, the floor cannot be walked on for at least 24 hours.  If you must access the area where our engineered wood floor installers are working, we will leave a walking path for you to use until the majority of the floor is dry.  Once you can walk on the rest of the floor, we will complete the installation.

Once all the adhesives have had time to cure, we will reinstall baseboards and transitions wherever needed.  After a professional installation, your new engineered wood floor should last for at least three decades!

Engineered Wood Floor Repair

While engineered wood is extremely durable, sometimes things happen.  Moving a heavy piece of furniture can leave a long scratch across your floor, or an accidental spill can cause an unsightly stain.  Fortunately, engineered wood can be sanded down, repaired, and refinished!

If your engineered wood floor in Victoria, BC has been damaged, call our experts.  No scratch is too deep and no stain is too large for us to remove, and we will match the color of the rest of the floor so that you won’t be able to tell that anything ever happened.

If your flooring is starting to look a little drab after years of use, we can also refinish the entire floor.  Just like solid hardwood, engineered wood needs to be refinished every eight to ten years to restore its beauty.  While the process can take several days, your floor will look as good as it did when it was first installed after we are finished!
