Why Choose Laminate?

Laminate floors are a popular choice for homes and businesses of all sizes and styles in Victoria, BC.  Here are just a few of the reasons why:

Durability

Laminate is manufactured with a durable top coating that resists scratches, stains, dents, and nearly anything else that might happen to it.  Your pets can play on it and you can move furniture across it without worry.  It is even resistant to fading, making it perfect for rooms that receive a lot of sunlight!

Appearance

Laminate comes in a variety of styles and shades, making it easy to find the exact look you want.  While most laminate floors resemble hardwood, there are also many options that are made to look like tile.  Laminate also allows for a wider range of colors and textures than hardwood does, and some modern laminates are even textured to match the feel of hardwood.

Cost

Laminate flooring is often half the price of hardwood or engineered hardwood flooring.  While it will not add the same resale value to your home that hardwood will, it is an economical choice if you don’t plan on selling your home anytime soon or if you might want to remodel your floor again in the future.  It also doesn’t need to be refinished like hardwood does, so the longer you keep it, the more cost effective it becomes!

Easy to Clean

Laminate can be cleaned the same way you would clean vinyl floors - with a broom and a mop.  Even if you manage a busy retail store, simply sweeping at the end of each business day will keep your laminate floor looking great.  Spills wipe up quickly with a mop or towel and do not leave stains behind.  No polishing or deep cleaning is ever required!

Environmentally Friendly

Laminate is not only often made from recycled wood; it can also be reused and recycled when you are finished with it!  When you are ready to replace a laminate floor, you can remove it and use it again in another room, or pass it on to someone else for use in their home or business.  When it is no longer possible to reuse the planks, they can be recycled and made into new flooring.

Laminate Flooring Installation Services

While laminate is often marketed as being easy to install by yourself, the appearance of the final product is highly dependent on the quality of the installation.  Sure, it is easy to snap planks together to cover a floor.  But if they are the least bit crooked, off center, or incorrectly cut, you will notice every time you walk into the room.  You might also inadvertently void the warranty on your new flooring by using the wrong tools or installation method!

Like many other types of flooring, the first step in installing laminate is acclimating the planks to the room where they will be installed.  Though laminate does not expand and contract as much as solid hardwood, its core is made of wood and must be acclimated to the room’s temperature and humidity to prevent gaps or buckling after installation.

During this acclimation period (which is typically 48 hours), we will remove your existing flooring (if needed) and prepare your subfloor.  Since laminate is a floating floor, your existing floor may be able to be left in place (though we can always remove it if you would like).  Once your subfloor is clean and level, we will install underlayment if needed (some types of laminate flooring already have an underlayment on each plank).

After the planks are fully acclimated, we can begin measuring and cutting.  This is the most crucial step when installing a laminate floor - planks must be precisely spaced both across the room and away from the wall.  Too little space between the planks and the wall can cause planks to buckle when they expand, while too much space will leave an ugly gap at the edge of the room.  If planks are not properly spaced across the floor, the whole room will look off-center!

Now comes the easy part!  Once planks are cut, installing a laminate floor is as simple as snapping them together in rows (being sure to offset the seams).  Depending on the type of laminate you select, rows may need to be gently tapped together to create a smooth and sturdy surface.

Once the entire floor is laid, our final step is to seal the edges with foam and caulk.  Not only does this hide the tiny expansion gap, it also keeps water from seeping under your floor in case of a spill.  We will also install transitions anywhere that your new laminate floor meets another flooring type.

Since no adhesives are generally needed to install laminate, your new floor can be used immediately!  After a professional installation, your floor will look just as good and last just as long as many other more expensive flooring options.
